Why Individual Healing is Not Enough & How Collective Care Liberates Us

In a world that often glorifies self-reliance and the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality, the idea of healing in community can feel both radical and deeply unfamiliar. For many of us—especially in BIPOC communities—survival has often looked like doing it all on our own. We’ve had to carry so much: ancestral wounds, generational traumas, systemic injustice. But what if the path to true liberation wasn’t meant to be walked alone?

What if healing is not just a solo journey—but a collective act of reclamation?

The Roots of Collective Healing

Long before healing became synonymous with therapy appointments and meditation apps, our ancestors practiced care in community. Across African, Indigenous, and Latinx cultures, healing was—and still is—a shared experience.

In many African traditions, healing is communal by nature. In Yoruba cosmology and Ifá-based practices, spiritual healing takes place in groups, through drumming, chanting, divination, and ancestral reverence. It is believed that wellness is not individual, but relational. Harmony must exist within families, communities, and the spirit world.

In Indigenous traditions of the Americas, practices like talking circles, sweat lodges, and communal ceremonies were created not just for the benefit of the individual, but for the soul of the collective. Pain was never meant to be carried in isolation—it was shared, witnessed, and transformed together.

In Latinx communities, curanderismo holds similar power. A traditional form of healing that blends Indigenous, African, and Catholic influences, curanderismo honors the importance of limpia (spiritual cleansings), herbal medicine, prayer, and ritual as communal forms of care. Often led by an elder, healer, or curandera, these practices are rooted in belonging, not separation.

How Systems of Power Disrupted Communal Healing

Unfortunately, the very systems we’re often trying to heal from—white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism—have made community feel unsafe, competitive, or inaccessible. These systems thrive when we’re disconnected: from our roots, from each other, and even from ourselves.

We’ve been taught that asking for help is weakness, that pain is a private matter, and that worth is earned through constant productivity. But these are not our values. They are tools of oppression that keep us isolated and depleted.

Healing collectively is an act of resistance. It interrupts the lie that we must carry everything alone.

The Sacred Power of Being Witnessed

There is something profoundly healing about being witnessed in your truth without judgment. When we gather to grieve, celebrate, or release together, we affirm that no one has to suffer in silence. We remind each other of our humanity, our worth, and our interconnectedness.

Whether it’s through spiritual circles, group rituals, or even a shared moment of breath and stillness—healing in community helps us regulate, restore, and remember. We remember that joy is a birthright. That liberation is possible. And that healing doesn’t have to be a lonely path.

Embracing Collective Healing Today

You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t need to feel “ready.” The beauty of collective care is that it holds space for you exactly as you are.

At Poder Healing, we offer spiritual and community services rooted in this truth: that transformation is possible when we allow ourselves to be held.

Our offerings are designed not just for personal healing, but for spiritual alignment in a community of care. If you feel called to explore deeper healing that reconnects you with ancestral wisdom and collective energy, we invite you to begin with one of our spiritual sessions:
